Saxophone Lessons Online Using Skype

I am now conducting saxophone lessons online using the video conferencing software Skype.

Using this technology, I am now able to expand my reach as an instructor and help students learn the saxophone anywhere in the world with neither me nor the student having to be in any one particular location.

Just last weekend I had a lesson with a saxophone student of mine, Josh Talsma. Using Skype, the internet, and our computers, I was able to teach in Charleston and he was able to learn in Texas at the very same time.

This combination of tools allows Josh and me the opportunity to watch, hear and listen to each other using our computers in real time. The lessons are held just as they were when he and I used to meet in person at Mount Pleasant Music.

Josh’s family used to live in the Charleston area, but when a work opportunity opened up in Texas for Josh’s father earlier this year, they moved to Kingwood. The neat part of this story is that, where geography previously limited our ability to meet, we are now able to have lessons whenever is convenient for both of us and our location does not matter.

Some of the primary benefits of having saxophone lessons online using Skype video conferencing are:

  1. Learning from the comfort of your own home
  2. No time or money spent traveling to and from lessons
  3. No geographic limitation

To have an online saxophone lesson with me, you will only need a few things in place:

  • A teachable spirit
  • Saxophone
  • Computer
  • Internet connectivity
  • Skype account & software
  • Microphone
  • Webcam

I am using a MacBook Pro which has a built-in microphone and iSight camera with no additional hardware. Everything I am using is simple and works great. Recently I have even had a few super-stable sessions with an international student on a wireless network.

Good afternoon Mr. Elder,

I’m a 47 year old business guy who wants to get back to playing my saxophone. I have a tenor and a c-melody (so I can play with the kids, piano and violin, without transposing). I live in Birchrunville, PA and would be interested in SKYPE lessons once per week. I have all the computer hardware to execute a skype lesson and am in the investigative stages of finding a teacher. I can read music. My goals would be to spend more time on my instrument, understand music theory so I can improvise and learn jazz and blues. My favorite saxophone player is Dexter Gordon.

If this is interesting for you, what is your availability and what does a lesson cost per hour or half hour?

Thanks,
Ed
